Shining Star Card

Shining Star Card

If you live in the UK we’ve been very lucky to see the Northern Lights at least twice this year. They’ve been visible all the way down to the South coast during the Summer and again this Autumn. This inspired this week’s DT make – a non-traditional Christmas Card using the colours inspired by the aurora. For this creation I’ve used the ‘Shining Star’ stamp set.

Tutorial

I’ve returned to using distress spray stains to try and recreate that splash of vibrant colour of the night sky. To get the look I was after I sprayed a piece of white card using ‘Shaded Lilac’, ‘Picked Raspberry’, ‘Kitsch Flamingo’ and ‘Saltwater Taffy’ inks before tapping some ‘Picket Fence’ white ink droplets over the surface of the card to add interest.

Next up, I blended ‘Blueprint Sketch’ distress ink around the edges of the card.

I then stamped the main star image from the ‘Shining Star’ stamp set using Versamark before heat embossing with Wow metallic silver superfine embossing powder.

I repeated this stamping on a separate piece of card and fussy cut out the star to add later.

To add further interest to the background I took the small star cluster and stamped this around the edge of the card using Hero Unicorn white pigment ink (you can see how subtle this is).

The mid-sized star was added in various places around the card using Versamark and heat embossed with Wow opaque bright white superfine embossing powder. The whole card was then made to shine using some Distress micro glaze. I find this really brings out the vibrancy and different layers of ink on the card.

There are 2 sentiments in the ‘Shining Star’ stamp set. I chose the ‘Shine Bright’ sentiment and stamped this with Versafine Clair ‘Nocturne’ onto white card before heat embossing with Wow superfine clear gloss embossing powder. The sentiment was then fussy cut out and edged with ‘Picked Raspberry’ distress ink before adding to black card.

Finally, the background was glued onto black card and a white card blank. The large star and the sentiment were added to the background using 3D mounts before some sequins and gems were added. I really enjoyed making this non-traditional Christmas card. If you’re not feeling that festive just yet hopefully this card will ease that transition from Autumn makes to those Christmas creations. Happy crafting!
